CARLSBERG STATION

NEW S-TRAIN STATION

Aarsleff Rail constructed a brand new S-train station for the Carlsberg City in the heart of Copenhagen.

On the doorsteps of a new college campus with 10.000 students and with 3,000 residential units being built over the next years, Carlsberg Station plays an important role in the traffic infrastructure of the new city quarter. The suburban S-train station was opened in the summer of 2016 and is expected to become one of Denmark’s busiest stations with around 24,000 travelers a day.

The contract was carried out for the development company Carlsberg Byen P/S and comprised the construction of the new station including concrete structures, track work, catenary, platform and technical installations as well as the demolition of the old Enghave Station nearby.

Keeping the trains rolling

The construction of the new station required very detailed planning and was carried out in a number of sub-phases in order to maintain unhindered train operation. Carlsberg station is placed on the most central suburban line in Copenhagen and train operations had to be maintained during the entire construction phase with only the most required track closures allowed. In order to carry out the casting of the 11 conically shaped columns for the cantilever bridge deck, the catenary system had to be rerouted temporarily before it was established in its final form. At the same time, the future track alignment was readied, complete with drainage, including four pumping stations. A new platform was built and cantilever decks cast to provide a bicycle parking and pedestrian area seven meters above the station.

Challenging logistics

Being situated in central Copenhagen the project was challenging with regard to logistics and traffic management. A single access road was shared with other contractors in the area and the needs of local residents and businesses had to be accommodated.
